Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer in both men and women and the second leading cause of death in the US. Although it takes 5 -10 years for a polyp to become cancerous, it seems younger adults are becoming more susceptible to this cancer than they once were. Colon cancer is no longer a disease of older adults. No matter your age, you are wise to consider how to spot early symptoms of colon cancer.
Few Symptoms But Deadly Consequences
There are few symptoms which highlight colon cancer in its earliest stages. Since it is a rather slow growing cancer, many of us can mistakenly think we are safe. Unless you maintain a regular screening regimen, you may not know until it’s too late.
Age 50 was the age doctors suggested adults begin screening with a colonoscopy. This has now been lowered to age 45 since more and more younger adults are experiencing colon cancer. Only through regular screenings can you be sure you are without any negative or growing polyps. During a colonoscopy, any polyp, both suspicious or not, is removed from the colon for testing.
Polyps grow on the lining of the intestine and can cause obstructions or grow into cancers.
Some Early Symptoms To Watch For
Many signs of early colon cancer are common with other types of less serious conditions, and many can be overlooked or even missed during testing. If you notice any of the following changes or ongoing symptoms, contact Colorectal Surgical Associates for further testing even if between your regular colon screenings.
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Changes in bowel habits or consistency
- Blood in the stool
- Narrowing of stool
- Feeling of incomplete evacuation
- Cramps, bloating and gas
- Fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
Just because you are younger, eat a healthy diet, exercise, and maintain a healthy weight, you are not immune from colon cancer. More and more younger healthy adults are being diagnosed every day.
Colon cancer is not just a disease for older people any longer. Getting regular screening is your best line of defense.
