Constipation isn’t something people commonly talk about. But if you’re feeling constipated, you’re not alone.
According to the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, more than 80 percent of people suffer from constipation at some point in their lives. Here are a few common culprits that cause constipation:
Travel
Traveling can cause constipation for a variety of reasons. When you travel, both your body and your diet are out of whack. It’s important to splurge a little while traveling, but try to keep your diet as regular as possible so your body adjusts easier.
Stress
Stress and lack of sleep can influence your enteric nervous system, which plays a major role in your gastrointestinal system. If stress is causing your bowel issues, find ways to de-stress such as picking up a hobby or turning off work emails for a few hours.
Lack of exercise
If life has gotten in the way of your exercise routine, you can become constipated. While finding time to exercise, work and live life can be difficult, it’s important to fit it in, even if it’s just a 30 minute walk.
Dehydration
Water and fiber are the most important elements when it comes to having healthy bowels. Fiber bulks with water. So, if you’re getting enough fiber, but not getting enough water, it could impact the way fiber is passing through your system. Drink up!
You have a chronic condition
If you have constipation and abdominal pain often, it’s time to see a gastroenterologist. Some disorders that a specialist may diagnose you with include Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease or even Celiac Disease.
