Darcy Shaw, MD
Colorectal Surgeon in Kansas City
I am board-certified in colon and rectal surgery with specialized training in advanced trauma life support and advanced trauma cardiac life support. I chose to specialize in colorectal surgery because it requires expertise in a wide variety of conditions and treatments, which is both personally challenging and intellectually stimulating. I treat life-threatening conditions such as colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease with successful outcomes, thus enabling my patients to experience a greatly improved quality of life.
Many of my patients visit me because their conditions and symptoms are debilitating or life-threatening. All surgery has risks and complications, particularly colorectal surgery, and my patients rely on my proficiency to lower risks. I find it very rewarding to provide patients with a positive result that allows them to regain enjoyment in their lives and be unburdened by medical issues. Patient quality of life is the ultimate objective for me, so much so that I spearheaded the formation of a Center of Colorectal Excellence at Lee’s Summit Medical Center, and I continue to work as program director and am active in a variety of quality improvement projects.
Our practice is renowned for expertise in da Vinci robotic surgery. We strive to prioritize precise, state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical procedures that offer optimal results. We believe in continual improvement and honing of our surgical expertise. In 2023, we became involved in setting consensus guidelines for improving surgical recovery and minimizing scars in patients with colorectal cancer. We also completed a chapter on surgical treatment of diverticulitis, and we were involved in research about surgical management for cancer that was once thought to be untreatable. I enjoy research specific to my field so that I can bring the most up-to-date, evidence-based approach to patient care.
I enjoy having open, informative discussions with each patient about their goals and expectations with the intent of providing customized treatment to each individual’s situation. Setting objectives and outcomes together with my patients is essential for establishing trust and ensuring that they feel empowered over their ultimate outcome.
