Pelvic Floor Therapy

Pelvic floor therapy is physical therapy targeted at the pelvic floor muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues, all of which work to support the pelvic organs with assistance in bladder and bowel control. In women, the pelvic floor keeps the bladder in place in front, the vagina and rectum in back, and the uterus at the top of the pelvic floor. In men, it keeps the bowels, bladder, urethra, and rectum in place.

At Colorectal Surgical Associates we offer pelvic floor therapy for the support the pelvic organs including bladder and bowel control. If you are experiencing symptoms of a pelvic floor disorder, please call (816) 941-0800 to meet with our colorectal surgeons. Colorectal Surgical Associates has providers located at four convenient locations in Kansas City, including Gladstone, Overland Park, Independence, and Lee’s Summit.

Physical therapy is designed to help the muscles work the way they should. Exercises focus on helping the pelvic muscles relax and get stronger. Frequently used techniques include:

  • Trigger point therapy – Pressure is applied on a spot on the body, called a trigger point.
  • Kegels – Pelvic floor muscles are contracted and relaxed to strengthen them.
  • Electrical stimulation – The applied stimulation helps reduce pelvic pain and muscle spasms.
  • Biofeedback – A device checks the contraction of the pelvic floor muscles. It is used to determine effectiveness of the exercises and any improvements.
