Lina O’Brien, MD

I have been in practice since 1998. I particularly being an expert (in a field that affects so many people. With colorectal surgery, I can care for patients of all ages, both men and women. I care for colorectal cancer patients on many levels, helping them with a frightening and life-changing diagnosis. My practice also includes conditions such as hemorrhoids and other noncancerous conditions. I enjoy the variety of highly complex robotic abdominal surgeries as well as less involved outpatient procedures.

I am board-certified in general surgery as well as colon and rectal surgery. Colorectal surgery requires an additional year of training which culminates in passing a written and oral exam to become board-certified. I am proud that our practice performs the highest number of robotic colorectal surgeries in Kansas City. Due to our expertise, our providers teach/train surgery residents and we train other surgeons on robotic techniques. I personally have done over 1100 surgeries.

I specialize in minimally invasive surgery. I have expertise in sphincter preserving surgery for rectal cancer (avoidance of a permanent colostomy). I also specialize in surgery for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis). I work hand in with gastroenterologists who do the medical management of these diseases.

My approach is very patient-centric. I like to educate my patients about surgery with diagrams and analogies that are easy to understand. I want them to know about their disease process and have a grasp of what will happen with surgery. I believe that educated expectations help patients heal and recover better.

I am married and have 3 adult children. I enjoy traveling, tennis, cooking, piano, and spending time with family.
