Anal Disorders
We specialize in a variety of disorders of the anus, including:
Anorectal Abscess
An anorectal abscess comes in many forms depending on its location. The abscesses are pockets of tissue filled with pus which can cause painful symptoms.
Anal Cancer
Anal cancer is the abnormal growth of cells in the anus, which is the opening at the end of the rectum where stool leaves the body. Anal cancer is uncommon and is often curable. Like other cancers, it can metastasize to other parts of the body, commonly the liver and lungs, although spreading is rare.
Anal Fissure
The anus is lined with a thin, delicate tissue called mucosa. An anal fissure is when a tear occurs along the lining, usually toward the end of the anus. Anal fissures are very common in infants but can affect people of any age.
Anal Fistula
Small glands are located inside the anus. In some cases, these glands can become blocked and the cavity infected. This is known as an anal abscess, which has a fifty percent chance of becoming an anal fistula. The abscess drains through the skin next to the anus. The fistula then forms a tunnel under the skin and connects with the infected gland.
Anal Warts
- HPV
- AIN
- Abnormal Anal Pap
Anal warts, also known as condyloma, are growths found on the skin around the anus or in the lower rectum. They first appear as tiny spots but can grow quite large and cover the entire anal area.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen, enlarged blood vessels in the lower areas of the rectum or anus. They are sometime described as “varicose veins of the anus or rectum.”
Pruritus Ani
Pruritus ani is itching of the anus and skin around the anus. The intensity of the itchiness increases with moisture, pressure, or rubbing caused by motion or clothing. The discomfort can become intolerable, often accompanied by burning or soreness. About 5% of the US population is estimated to experience this type of discomfort.
